Step 2: Fold the Leather

Fold the leather so that one end overlaps the other. You want the ends to be perpendicular to each other, with one on top and the other hidden behind. Make sure that the ends are not poking out further than the piece of leather they are in front of or behind. Hold in place.

Step 3: Pinch the Fold

While still holding the overlapping pieces in place, pinch the two pieces of leather together with your index finger and thumb. This will create a fold.

Step 4: Cut the Fold

Holding the two pieces of leather together at the fold, cut a 1/4-inch slit with your scissors. The slit should be cut in the centermost part of the fold, but be careful not to cut it completely through.

Step 5: Measure the Jute String

Measure out 56 inches of jute string. Fold over an 8-inch increment of string. Continue folding the string in 8-inch increments until you reach the end. There should be approximately 6 folds. Separately cut an extra piece of string from the original roll. It should be about 8 inches long. Save this for later.

Step 6: Fold the Jute String

Fold the entire folded bunch of jute string in half. Holding the top of the fold, wrap the extra piece of string around the folded bunch several times until the tassel is secure. Your string should be a couple of centimeters from the top of the tassel, leaving a small opening. Tie a knot, securing the string.

Step 7: Insert the Brad

Slip one brad through the opening you left at the top of the tassel. You may need to slide the wrapped string up to hold the brad more securely.

Step 9: Secure the Brad

Hold the head of the brad with one of your fingers and flip the piece of faux leather over so you can see the back where the brad is protruding. Spread the ends of the brad out to secure. Make sure to press down on the ends of the brad so that it is firmly in place, holding the tassel on the other side.
